Girls weekend to SFO - Jan 2023

Posting it after a month or so from the trip.

San Francisco, the city by the bay, is known for its picturesque beauty, stunning landmarks, and vibrant culture. A visit to this city promises an experience of a lifetime, and Ghirardelli Square is one of the best places to stay to experience it all. This is my 5th time in the city and I loved it as much as it was my first!

In January, I had the pleasure of staying in Ghirardelli Square with my girl friends, and it was an unforgettable experience. The square is located in the Fisherman's Wharf area, and it offers stunning views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.

We picked the Fairmont Heritage Place as our digs (thanks to the girls who did the research) which offers luxurious suites with stunning views of the bay. Our suite was spacious, well-appointed, had 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms (exactly what 5 girls require!) and had all the modern amenities we needed for a comfortable stay.
It included a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living area with a fireplace, and a private balcony that offered breathtaking views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The hotel staff was warm and welcoming, and they went out of their way to ensure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. The hotel also offers a fitness center, a spa, and a rooftop terrace - a firepit included - with panoramic views of the city. Staying at the Fairmont Heritage Place was truly a highlight of our trip. If you're planning a trip to San Francisco, I highly recommend staying at the Fairmont Heritage Place in Ghirardelli Square.

The square is named after the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, which has been operating in the area since the late 1800s. Today, the square is home to several shops, restaurants, and cafes, and it has become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

We took a leisurely walk along the Fisherman's Wharf, where we spotted sea lions basking in the sun on Pier 39. We also visited the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and took in the stunning views of the city skyline and the Bay.

We also made reservations to dine in Rooh SFO which is known for its inventive and contemporary take on traditional Indian cuisine, and our dining experience was nothing short of exceptional. The restaurant's stylish decor, attentive service, and flavorful dishes made for a truly unforgettable evening.

San Francisco is also home to a vibrant arts scene, and we got to experience it firsthand with a lot of local artists displaying their pieces in the area.

On the last day we did the quintessential tram ride and admired the lovely SFO architecture. And to cap off our trip we stopped by the Pine Street Diner, a classic 24-hour diner that has been a local favorite for decades.

The Pine Street Diner is known for its hearty American breakfasts, delicious burgers, and classic diner fare. We arrived in the late evening and were delighted to find that the diner had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I had the best vegetarian burger there! Highly recommend.

Mid-winter Break 2023 to Miami: A Perfect Blend of Beaches, Culture, and Nightlife

Miami, the city of sun, sand, and sea, is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world. We recently had the opportunity to visit this vibrant and exciting city, and it exceeded all of my expectations. From the beautiful beaches to the rich cultural offerings, Miami has something for everyone. This has been on V's list for a while now because: alligators!

Day 1 - Arrive, check in to hotel and relax. We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in Brickell Key. Highly recommend.

Day 2 - Miami Design District and the famous South Beach.

The Miami Design District is a vibrant and dynamic neighborhood in Miami that has become a hub for creativity, culture, and fashion. This once-neglected area has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years, with the development of luxury retail stores, art galleries, and top-rated restaurants.

The Design District is located just north of downtown Miami and is easily accessible by car or public transportation. The area is famous for its stunning architecture, with a mix of historic and contemporary buildings that house some of the city's best-known brands and designers.

One of the most striking features of the Design District is the public art installations that can be found throughout the area. The neighborhood boasts an impressive collection of outdoor sculptures and murals by world-renowned artists, such as the Buckminster Fuller Fly's Eye Dome, a geodesic dome made of reflective panels that creates an ever-changing pattern of light.

The Miami Design District is also home to some of the best contemporary art galleries in the city, including the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), which showcases cutting-edge exhibitions by emerging and established artists from around the world. Other notable galleries in the area include the de la Cruz Collection and the Maman Fine Art.

I really enjoyed the Design District's luxurious shopping experience, with flagship stores from Dior, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Cartier. The district also has many independent boutiques that offer unique and trendy fashion pieces - but I did not get an opportunity to try them.

Overall, the Miami Design District is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to experience the best of art, culture, and fashion in Miami. With its striking architecture, impressive art installations, and luxurious shopping and dining options, it's no wonder why this neighborhood has become one of the city's top attractions.

From there we drove to South Beach.

The pristine white sand, clear blue waters, and vibrant energy of the area was truly breathtaking. As I strolled along the boardwalk, I admired the art deco architecture of the hotels and the colorful lifeguard towers. The beach was crowded, but the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming.

After spending a few hours basking in the sun and enjoying the refreshing waters, we headed to Four Seasons Cafe for a quick drink and bite.

Day 3 - Everglades National Park

The highlight of the trip for us was visiting Everglades National Park with my son through a tour with Wild Lime Adventures. I highly recommend them. It was an unforgettable experience that allowed us to get up close and personal with the unique and beautiful ecosystem of the Everglades.

Our tour started early in the morning, and we were greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable guide - Ryan - who gave us a brief introduction about the park and the wildlife that we were about to see. We boarded a comfortable van and drove the western part of the park. We had lunch here (small hiccup: V developed an allergic reaction that resolved with Benadryl) and boarded a boat to check out Gulf of Mexico. We saw a saw fish baby and a dolphin here.

We also explored the park on foot, hiking through a 1 miles trail/boardwalk and we spotted turtles and water snakes on this short hike. Our guide pointed out the different types of birds, fish, and reptiles that call the Everglades home, and we were amazed by the diversity of the wildlife in the area. The wild orchids, the bromeliads (did you know pineapple is a bromeliad?) and many more flora was impressive. We also had the opportunity to see alligators up close, basking in the sun on the banks of the river. It was a thrilling experience that my son and I will never forget.

The tour continued on as we boarded a comfortable airboat, and as we glided through the marshy waters, we could feel the cool breeze on our faces and the sun shining down on us. The highlight of the airboat tour was a visit to the Miccosukee Indian Village, where we learned about the history and culture of the local Native American tribe. Overall, our visit to Everglades National Park with Wild Lime Adventures was an incredible experience that allowed us to connect with nature, learn about the local wildlife and culture, and make unforgettable memories together. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Miami or looking for a unique and exciting outdoor adventure.

Day 4 - Drive to Key West

We took the opportunity to take a scenic drive from Miami to Key West, exploring the Florida Keys and the beautiful turquoise waters that surround them. The drive was an unforgettable adventure that took us through a series of small islands, connected by breathtaking bridges and offering stunning views of the ocean.

Our journey started early in the morning, and as we drove south along the Overseas Highway, we could feel the excitement building - especially for N who was super keen about this drive. We passed through the different keys, each with its unique personality and charm. We stopped at several small towns along the way, such as Islamorada and Marathon - wish we had time to take in one of the many scuba diving tours. File away for next time.

The highlight of our drive was crossing the Seven Mile Bridge, a stunning feat of engineering that spans the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The bridge offers incredible panoramic views of the ocean, and we even spotted some sea turtles and dolphins swimming in the distance.

As we continued our drive, we were amazed by the crystal-clear waters that surrounded us, with shades of blue and green that seemed to change with every passing mile. We stopped at several viewpoints along the way to take in the breathtaking scenery and snap some memorable photos.

Finally, we arrived at Key West, the southernmost point in the continental United States. We spent the afternoon exploring the town's historic district, with its colorful houses and charming streets. We also visited Fort Zachary Taylor state park and spent time on the beach...taking in the sunset and the serene blue waters.

Overall, our drive from Miami to Key West was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that allowed us to see the beauty of the Florida Keys up close. From the stunning bridges to the crystal-clear waters and the charming towns, this journey is a must-do for anyone visiting the area.

Fort Ebey State Park: A Day of Adventure and Relaxation on Whidbey Island, Washington

In August 2022 as part of our summer camping series, my family and I had the pleasure of day camping at Fort Ebey State Park, located on beautiful Whidbey Island, Washington. The park is known for its stunning views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, as well as its miles of hiking and biking trails.

We arrived around noon and set up our campsite in the day-use shelter that I had reserved; the shelter is suitably equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. From there, we set off on a hike along the Bluff Trail, which winds through lush forests and offers breathtaking views of the Sound.

The trail was moderately challenging, with several steep inclines and rocky terrain, but the views were worth the effort. We stopped at several viewpoints along the way to take in the stunning scenery and snap some photos.

After our hike, we headed to the beach to relax and soak up the sun. The beach at Fort Ebey State Park is a hidden gem, with soft white sand and crystal-clear water. We spent the afternoon swimming, playing beach volleyball, and building sandcastles.

As the day started to wind down, we gathered around the campfire and cooked up some delicious (vegetarian too) hot dogs and s'mores. Overall, our day at Fort Ebey State Park was a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. The park offers something for everyone, from hiking and biking to swimming and beachcombing. If you're ever in the Whidbey Island area, be sure to add Fort Ebey State Park to your must-visit list.

Cabin Camping in Riverside State Park

Fall is one of the most beautiful times to visit Riverside State Park in Washington state. The park's sprawling acres come alive with an array of stunning colors as the leaves begin to change. This is precisely why my family and I decided to visit the park in October of 2022, and we were not disappointed.

As soon as we arrived, we were struck by the beauty of the landscape. The vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the leaves made for a breathtaking sight. We had reserved a cabin to stay in, and it was the perfect choice for us. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our stay, including a kitchenette and an attached restroom! How cool is that :)

We spent our first day hiking the trails and exploring the park. It was raining a lot but the views were stunning. We saw a lot of wildlife on our hike, including deer and squirrels, which delighted our kids. The highlight of our hike was reaching the Bowl and Pitcher suspension bridge. It was an incredible sight to see the river rush beneath us, and we couldn't help but take a lot of pictures.

We spent our evenings in the cabin, enjoying the warmth and playing board games. We also made s'mores on the campfire outside the cabin, and made simple meals to enjoy.

Overall our trip to Riverside State Park was a memorable experience that we will cherish forever. The stunning fall colors, scenic hikes, and cozy cabin stay made it the perfect getaway for our family. If you're looking for a beautiful and serene escape in nature, Riverside State Park should be on your list of must-visit destinations.

The ease of typing in blogspot and falling in love with WA state parks

I love Blogger platform. The ease with which I just picked up and started writing is....precious. The newer platforms like WIX and the (now) glamorous WordPress just intimidate me.

This post is a stream of consciousness.

I turned 43 last month. As part of the celebrating that superb milestone, I booked a glamping weekend with really good kayaking opportunities here in South Puget Sound.  I was looking for blogs that had a details about the place I am going to and I found a lot of valuable information.

Here is my way of giving some of it back.

We booked cabin named Whispering Firs in Ike Kinswa State Park. Even though the weather was not cooperating, we had a lot of fun. The showers were nearby and clean. We saw the park staff clean all restrooms more than 3 times a day. That is some attention to hygiene. Highly recommend.

The cabin fit our family of 3 comfortably. There are 2 rooms. Living room and a bedroom. Living room has a futon and a table that seats 4; the bedroom has a bunk bed that can sleep 3. Both the rooms have heaters and you can prop open the windows for airflow.

The cabins share their own set of restrooms and showers and you need a shower tokens to operate the hot water faucet. There is a campfire ring outside the cabin.

Some photos.

Spring break 2022 - Port Townsend and Fort Worden State Park with our PDX cousins

Port Townsend is a charming town located in Washington State, known for its Victorian architecture and stunning natural beauty. In April 2022, we had the pleasure of exploring Fort Worden State Park and all the attractions the area had to offer , while staying at a wonderful apartment that accommodated our entire group.

Fort Worden State Park is a 434-acre park located in Port Townsend, known for its historic military structures and stunning natural scenery. The park is situated on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, offering breathtaking views of the Olympic Mountains and the Salish Sea. During our visit we had a blast exploring the park's beaches, hiking trails, and historic structures. The park has a variety of activities for people of all ages, making it a perfect destination for a family vacation.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the tide pools in the area. The tide pools at Fort Worden State Park are home to a variety of marine life, including starfish, crabs, and anemones. We had a lovely time exploring the tide pools, observing the creatures up close and learning about the unique ecosystem of the area. After a day of exploring the park and the tide pools, we returned to our apartment, which was the perfect home base for our family. The apartment was spacious, comfortable, and had all the amenities we needed for a relaxing stay. We made some simple meals and even ordered one of the best pizzas we had in a while.

We also had the opportunity to go on a whale watching tour, which was an unforgettable experience. We were lucky enough to spot a gray whale during the tour, making it a truly special day.

The whale watching tour was a thrilling adventure, taking us out into the open waters of the Salish Sea. The tour was led by experienced guides who provided information about the local marine life and the ecosystem of the area.

As we cruised along the water, we spotted the gray whale in the distance. The whale was spouting, a magnificent sight to behold. We were amazed by the size and grace of the animal, and the kids found it funny that a whale's burp can stink for miles.

In addition to the gray whale, we also spotted a variety of other marine life, including sea lions, otters and seals. The tour was a great way to learn about the diverse ecosystem of the Salish Sea, and our family enjoyed the educational and fun experience.

Overall, the whale watching tour was a highlight of our trip to Port Townsend and Fort Worden State Park. Spotting a gray whale in the wild was an unforgettable experience, and the tour provided a unique perspective on the beauty and diversity of the area's marine life. If you're planning a trip to Port Townsend and Fort Worden State Park, be sure to consider a whale watching tour for an exciting and educational adventure.
